Steeped in College history, MAD began in the 1960s as a walk-a-thon along our local beaches from Henley to Semaphore and back. Today, it has grown to include a wide range of activities catering for students from Reception to Year 12. St Michael鈥檚 College prides itself on both strong participation and the success of fundraising on this special day, raising approximately $50,000 each year for those most in need.

In 2025, La Salle High School in Khushpur, Pakistan, received funding for the building of a water filtration plant, washrooms, and maintenance projects. This was made possible largely through MAD donations!

In recent years, funds have supported Lasallian projects throughout the Asia-Pacific region, as well as local and national charities including St Vincent de Paul, Caritas and the Hutt Street Centre.

This year鈥檚 funds will support repairs and maintenance, along with the construction of a computer lab and student bathrooms at various Lasallian schools in Pakistan.

As part of Mission Action Day, each year a group of Year 12 leaders work on a launch video to be shown to students to enhance their understanding of Mission Action Day and showcase the range of activities they can choose from. It is an opportunity for them to grow their leadership skills, learn more about the art of directing, planning and videography (thank you to Alice Ward from the Marketing and Communications team for supporting students and bringing together their vision) and work with students and staff across campuses (thank you to Principal Tony Daley, staff and students who were willing to join in the fun!). And always creates many laughs across the College as we watch together!

You can view this years Mission Action Day Video (which has a ‘Jumanji’ theme) below:

All Student Involvement

As part of fundraising activities, students will participate in a range of activities on Friday 27 March 2026.

Students in Primary and Secondary, will need to sign up to their chosen activity through the QKR! app.
Information on how to download QKR! is here.

Year 12 Fundraising Initiative

The Year 12 cohort are also upping the fundraising activities this year with their own individual fundraising platform. You can support them by making a donation towards an individual students fundraising total .
All funds raised by Year 12’s are donated to the overall Mission Action Day total.

What a term it鈥檚 been!

Packed with lots of learning at the Primary Campus with many enjoyable events and excursions/incursions too, and it hasn鈥檛 finished yet, with the College community coming together on Friday to celebrate De La Salle Day. This special event, on our annual calendar, invites us to reflect on our Lasallian heritage and traditions and importantly, we acknowledge St John Baptist De La Salle, Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (FSC) and Patron Saint of educators. Look for the photos in the next edition of the Star.

Here are some of the highlights for this term:

The term started out with lots of energy at the Primary Campus. Our Year 1s and 3s started planning their recipes and shopping lists for the term for the Kitchen Garden Cooking program. Year 3s invited members from the Leadership Team to join them throughout the term to experience not only the planning and preparation that goes into the program, but also to experience the fun and enjoyment and coming together at the end of the lessons to enjoy a shared table. The Year 1s value being part of the cooking program and have been learning valuable skills and enjoying the experience too. A special mention, thank you to Mr Matthew Williams, Deputy Principal Pastoral & Head of Secondary for taking the time out of your day to cook with us. We hope you enjoyed the lessons as much as our Year 3s did.

We conducted two College Tours this term, led by our Student Leaders. The tours are always booked out and the comments we hear back are very pleasing. We appreciate receiving feedback from prospective parents about the new facilities and the positive praise about the disposition and manners of our Student Leaders, and their knowledge about the school and all things Primary.

Book Week is always an enjoyable week at the Primary Campus with many activities taking place, including Where鈥檚 Wally, special guest readers and of course we all count down to the annual Book Week parade. Students and staff were invited to dress up as their favourite book character with staff finding their creative side, dressing up as Pirates, Indiana Jones, Willy Wonka, characters from 101 Dalmatians and Where鈥檚 Wally, just to name a few. There were many great dress ups, but by far the most effort by a staff member goes to Mr Mitch Boulton who dressed up as the late Steve Irwin 鈥榯he Crocodile Hunter鈥. Mr Irwin would have been delighted with Mitch鈥檚 impersonation, temporarily changing his dark ringlet hair to a wig not that dissimilar to the way Steve wore his hair and there was something to be said about Mitch鈥檚 style of handling a croc! There were certainly a few laughs amongst the students and staff.

Several year levels celebrated Mass or participated in 鈥楲iturgy of the Word鈥 and we welcomed parent/caregiver attendance. On Thursday, Week 4 we celebrated a Whole School Mass – the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. We raised funds and collected goods for Hutt Street and Catherine House through a 鈥楥razy Sock Day鈥 and we are thankful for the community support we receive on these special days.

Co-Curricular kept us all busy with a number of winter sports on offer at the Primary Campus. Mrs Jane Hidson, Co-Curricular Coordinator has independently managed 48 teams, coaches and volunteers, whilst coordinating rosters and games; as well as making herself available to attend information sessions and meetings across a range of organisations that contribute to our successful sports program. A big thank you to our volunteers and staff who support this program.

Monday and Tuesday, Week 9: Our Lasallian Star families were invited to their first parent-teacher conversation. These conversations provide an opportunity for teachers to share insights about each student鈥檚 transition to school, their literacy and numeracy progress, social and emotional development, overall wellbeing, and learning goals. It is also a chance for parents and caregivers to ask questions and strengthen the partnership between home and school for best learning outcomes for all students.

Tuesday, Week 9: Families from Reception to Year 6 were invited to attend the student led Learning & Achievement Conferences showcasing learning across the curriculum, including specialist subjects. With Specialist teachers highlighting students鈥 learning in exhibitions throughout the school. These conferences provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Identify their learning strengths and areas of growth
  • Understand and share learning concepts
  • Use oral and presentation skills to articulate their learning
  • Further utilise digital technologies and collaborative skills
  • Reflect on Primary Values

There were a variety of engaging education excursions and incursions, too many to mention, but here are a couple: The Silly Scientist was a great hit; the National Railway Museum 鈥 where there is always interesting things to see; the Thriving People Event for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students 鈥 it was a significant opportunity for students to build relationships, celebrate together and learn about their cultures and identities; Sprout Cooking School 鈥 a hands-on opportunity to explore healthy eating, sustainability and the joy of cooking for our Year 1s. We registered again this year to be part of 鈥楾he Great Book Swap鈥 raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Mr Bill Hansberry presented to parents/caregivers 鈥 Raising Kids with Grit and Empathy, including many take-away ideas and information.

The Parent Committee have been active again this year in supporting the Primary Campus events and fundraising. Most recently, the Quiz Night raised funds for Puddle Jumpers, and we thank the families and businesses that donated prizes and gift cards for the raffles. The night was a real success. We celebrated Father鈥 Day with 鈥楲amingtons for Lads鈥 and a coffee cart, which was supported by a great turn out. There were fun outdoor activities and lots of photos taken up against the Father鈥檚 Day backdrop 鈥 it was a memorable occasion. The Gift Stall was set up and ready to go that same day, with students selecting one or two Father鈥檚 Day gifts with their pre purchased voucher. We thank the Parent Committee for their planning and organisation of the day, and we appreciate their efforts ensuring everyone had a great time and for all the support they offer the Primary Campus.

Our sustainability team 鈥楨arthMates鈥 have been very active with students across all year levels. There鈥檚 been some additional greening take place; lots of planting and harvesting in the garden with lots of the produce used in the cooking program recipes; chicken responsibilities, including collecting eggs, feeding, kindness and gentleness; as well as tree planting in recognition of National Tree Day.

The Primary Dance Concert took place on Thursday, Week 9. So much talent amongst the students. Our Performing Arts Teachers – Miss Talia Gaertner-Jones and Mrs Holly Dineen have worked extremely hard over the year, coordinating and choreographing, and to get the students to a point where they could all perform on the day, including our youngest learners the Lasallian Stars, was amazing. Well done to everyone involved.

Wednesday was the night of our school鈥檚 performance in the Catholic Schools Music Festival. Fifteen students took to the stage, after much learning and practice under the guidance Miss Gaertner-Jones and Mrs Dineen. Previous festivals have always been a great success, and our performance didn鈥檛 disappoint 鈥 well done to the Choir!

As we all look forward to the term break to refresh and re-energise. We wish you all a safe and happy holiday. Term 4 is shaping up to be engaging and energetic.

At Advent and Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we give praise and thanks, we reconnect with family and friends. Beginning the Church’s liturgical year, Advent, (from Latin adventus, 鈥渃oming鈥), is the four week period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. It starts on the Sunday 3 December and ends on the fourth Sunday before 25 December.

What if you鈥檙e not religious?

Even though Advent has a special meaning in the Christian Church, it can be celebrated by everyone regardless of your religious beliefs. After all, this time of year can be particularly busy 鈥 the Advent celebration may help you to slow down and take a moment to ponder what is important in life.聽As times have been so difficult recently it has been easy to lose sight of the more important things. Why not use Advent to have everyone in the family remember to slow down, be more grateful and think of others?

College initiatives

The Primary Campus supported a Centacare Christmas appeal and Year 7 and 8 have drives to support the Henley Parish Vinnies Christmas appeal with food and Christmas items to improve Christmas time for the less fortunate in our community. Year 9 classes also assist The Adelaide Day Centre with items for their Christmas drive with a focus on sustainable items. Thank you to our community for supporting these important groups and teaching your children to have generous hearts and be conscious of others.

Advent Wreath

An advent wreath in our home or church is a reminder to prepare for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. When we light the candles on the wreath, it symbolises the coming of light (Jesus) into the world.

  • Candle 1 (violet): represents hope
  • Candle 2 (violet): represents peace
  • Candle 3 (rose): represents joy
  • Candle 4 (violet): represents love
  • The central white candle is lit on Christmas Day and represents Christ

There is a link with guidance on how to make a wreath for your home and prayers you can say as a family.

Term 1 has been a huge success for St Michael鈥檚 Co-curricular Sport. Our students have represented the school with fantastic passion and spirit, building new connections and setting a foundation for the remaining school year.

Student participation in the Co-curricular Program so far, is something we have never seen before at St Michael鈥檚. We have had students representing the College in cricket, swimming, basketball, badminton, volleyball, water polo, tennis, touch football and athletics. Not to mention the other countless co-curricular activities happening throughout the school each week.

Being new in the role, I have been impressed with the manner our students play each time they represent the College. The sportsmanship our students show and the willingness to accept everyone is something that sets us apart from other schools. These students鈥 values demonstrate the care between our cohort and the 鈥榟ave a go鈥 attitude our students always bring to school sport.

We have also had several students represent the College at State and National Competitions. These students continue to demonstrate the College spirit and we encourage them to pursue their sporting ambitions and be the best they can be.

Term 1 Co-Curricular Highlights

  • Our 1st XI Cricket team’s determination and teamwork led them to the semi-finals in the Saturday afternoon cricket competition. They showed some fantastic commitment to stick together and make the final series.
  • Despite a close loss of 5 points in the Grand Final, our Open Girls Basketball team dominated the Saturday morning competition throughout the season, showcasing remarkable skill and consistency.
  • Our Open Girls Touch Football team went undefeated this season, transitioning from the Middle A competition last year. Their teamwork and continuous improvement were key to their success.
  • Both our Open Girls and Boys Volleyball teams had impressive starts to the season, displaying excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. They always showed great care and support for each other.
  • Our Open Badminton team proved themselves as tough competitors throughout the term, led by some impressive senior players who showed fantastic leadership for the young squad.
  • Our Open Water Polo team, comprising of students from Year 9 to Year 12, grew stronger as a team throughout the term and finished with great momentum. We anticipate a successful Term 4 for this dedicated team.
  • Led by outstanding senior leaders, our Drive Tennis squad showed great consistency. A team that will grow as a squad the more time they spend together.

We look forward to watching our students excel in Co-curricular Sport in Term 2!

Our Year 7 students reflected on their Year 7 Retreat Experience…

On Thursday of Week 10, the Year 7 students were lucky enough to attend our first ever Retreat at St Michael鈥檚 College, alongside our Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 College Leaders and Captains.

The College Leaders were amazing. We had so much fun with the tasks and activities they set for us based on our Lasallian school values: Community, Challenge, Choice, and Communication. The College Leaders all had outstanding speaking skills and were excellent at communicating with our cohort.

No words can express our gratitude towards all the staff and teachers that gave up their time to come on this Retreat, and Sharina and Mr Dempsey for organising this fun-filled day. Lastly to all the College Leaders for giving up their precious school time to come and make our first Retreat at St Michael鈥檚 College special.

Matthew 5:16 reads 鈥淟et your light shine before everyone so, they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven.鈥

– Olivia S and Siena P (7GPC-2)

On Thursday we attended the Year 7 Retreat. This day was all about team building and the core values of the school – community, challenge, choice and communication. Our Peer Support Leaders and College Leaders ran the day. We engaged in four activities; all the activities had a meaning or connection to the core values. One of these activities was the banana split game to get us warmed up, which led to a game where we were asked how we’d survive on an island. This was to help with communication and we worked as a community. This day was a great way to make connections and it was an overall good day.

– Thomas O (7BPC-3)

The Year 7 Retreat day was a great experience, and I鈥檓 so grateful that I got the opportunity to go. The day was filled with lots of fun activities and team building games centered around Lasallian values. As a cohort, we also got to learn a lot of important life lessons around the topic of teamwork, and it was so much fun learning from the older students at the school. The main lesson I got out of the day is that teamwork is very important. If you can鈥檛 work as a team, then you are making everything so much harder. Overall, the Year 7 Retreat day was amazing, and remember, there is no 鈥淚鈥 in team.

– Zoe C (7GPC-4)

It was a good opportunity to make new friends and to meet other people in our year level. The activities were engaging, and we think lots of people enjoyed those activities. There was a lot of good equipment that we could use at lunch and recess. The Year 10 Peer Support Leaders were helpful and encouraging, they got involved in the activities and were really nice. The pizza was super tasty as well. The Year 12 College Leaders helped a lot as well. I think that we learnt a lot about our school values, community, challenge, and choice. So overall it was a great Retreat.

– Emilio V and Fraser E (7BPC-5)
