On Tuesday, May 9, 6 Year 9 students of Italian were invited to UniSA鈥檚 鈥業talian in the Workplace鈥 seminar. Along with many other students from schools across Adelaide, we learnt how having Italian as a second language can benefit your career. It was amazing to see how professionals in industries from law, hospitality, and education, to healthcare, tech, and STEM were able to use not only the Italian language but the Italian culture in their everyday lives at work. Topped off with delicious Italian food throughout the day, as well and 鈥渟peed dates鈥 with Italian mentors and creating career profiles, it was incredible to be reminded how amazing Italian is and how far it can get you.

鈥淚 now understand how important it is to continue Italian throughout high school, something I now am looking forward to doing.鈥 Isabella Dragani

鈥淭he UniSA seminar was an engaging and enjoyable excursion that was fun, interesting, and extremely informative. I learnt that Italian (or any other language) can influence and improve many jobs and create all jobs run more fluently. This has convinced me to continue learning Italian and be dedicated to the language. I think the most surprising thing that I found whilst on the excursion was that only 22.3% of Australians are bilingual and even less are multilingual. I think this surprised me the most since Australia is a very multicultural country. Because of this small population of multilingual individuals, language barriers that can occur.鈥 Audrey Balic

鈥淎t UniSA I learnt some very interesting facts about why Italian is so important and why being bilingual could help you so much in the future. I learnt that not only it will expand your social life with different cultures and make new friends from different countries. But it will also boost your chances of getting employed into a job in the future. It will also make a family holiday overseas much easier if I can learn a language, I will be able to communicate for my family. I learnt that Learning a new language would improve my brain because I would have to possibly change between two languages.鈥 Aiden Grieger

鈥淲e heard from people with a range of different careers and ages. They talked about their experiences and how they benefited from knowing Italian jobwise. Personally, my favourite part of the day was when we got to sit down with the mentors as a group and ask questions after hearing how they got to where they are. These people were doctors and healthcare workers, station managers (for radio), teachers, wine makers, and engineers from industries such as space and aviation.鈥 Massimo Marrone

鈥淭he day at Unisa was a fantastic experience, which promoted the criticality of learning another language, specifically Italian. I learnt that being bilingual results in better job opportunities and significantly improves one鈥檚 cognitive abilities. In addition to this, being bilingual enhances one鈥檚 memory, critical thinking skills, and heightens one鈥檚 cultural insight. Finally, the key takeaway message from this seminar was to continue learning Italian despite any challenges it may present because it can lead to incredible career prospects, expanded travel opportunities and an overall richer lifestyle. Thank you for organising this incredible excursion!鈥 Jessica Squeo

鈥淭he single most important lesson I learned in 25 years of talking every single day to people, was that there鈥檚 a common denominator in our human experience. The common denominator I found in every single interview is we want to be validated. We want to be understood.鈥 – OPRAH WINFREY

Social Intelligence is the ability to understand our emotions and those of others around us; to perceive what makes us and them 鈥榯ick鈥. It helps us to build relationships and navigate social environments with family, friends, colleagues and even complete strangers. It helps us to be aware of the emotions and the motives of both ourselves and other people, past and present, and can help us to regulate our responses, so that we can carry ourselves comfortably in different social contexts. Think of the person you know who times a joke brilliantly or delivers the perfect compliment – these are examples of social intelligence at work!

Sometimes people who have strong social intelligence can come across as confident or we might see them as having 鈥榮trong people skills鈥. Often, they also usually enjoy helping others to manage complex social situations and feel comfortable in addressing challenges they may face.

Interestingly, the strong relationships that can develop as a result of social intelligence can have an impact on our physical health as the science says that our immune system actually improves and this helps us fight disease, so we can see the importance of growing this strength. In Braving the Wilderness, Bren茅 Brown shares that loneliness and weak relationships are some of the major sources of stress, health problems and depression, and living with loneliness increases our risk of premature death by an enormous 45%!

How can we develop social intelligence and allow for our relationships with others to be more meaningful and genuine?

For our young people, it鈥檚 tricky as they often don鈥檛 regulate or read emotions accurately as a result of the physical stage of brain development- we鈥檝e learned a lot more about this as a result of technology and research in the last 20 years.

We can reflect on social situations and our own behaviour and responses, learning from our successes and failures, and importantly, we can reflect on the manner people around us who really make us feel listened to and affirmed. What is it that they do that allows us leave that conversation feeling valued and cared for as though we really matter?

At St Michael鈥檚 on most days, we have conversations around social intelligence in classrooms all over the campus! In addition, many other activities build on this capacity. This week we see the first of the workshops for Girls鈥 classes in Year 7-9, in our Enlighten Education workshop on Friday for Year 8 Girls. This program works constructively to build social intelligence, conflict resolution skills and self-awareness and confidence! On Monday morning Year 10 students were lucky to have the opportunity to gather to participate in the presentation of Poetry in Action – a performance which focused on the poetry of Wilfred Owen and his experiences of war as a young man. I know students would have left this session with a much stronger insight into the value and accessibility of poetry and the experiences of a generation so far removed from their own. It was hard not to be emotionally engaged by the performance! Mr Spadavecchia also shared an amazing song; Dear Brother- Sounds of De La Salle, created by De La Salle College in New Zealand, that interweaves beautifully with this strength- you might like to have a listen: .

Harper Lee wrote the character of Atticus in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. One of his famous lines鈥 鈥You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of viewuntil you climb into his skin and walk around in it,鈥 captures beautifully the value of all of these experiences in the building of social intelligence.

The rich learning experiences of each day can help us to understand our individual experiences, emotions and responses better, and really can help us know, value and care for each other, and become the learners and leaders of the world.

Australian Airforce Cadets Experience

My journey with the Australian Airforce Cadets started in the year of 2021. I joined to fulfil my dream of becoming a pilot and to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather. My grandpa joined the Airforce in 1976 at the age of 20, he joined with the passion of serving his country, which led him to serve for exactly 21 years as a Russian train driver. He then retired in 1997. My mum lived on many different bases around the world which gave her first class insight. I grew up continuously hearing stories of their travels, of my grandpa’s friends and many other things, because of this, I consider him as one of my biggest role models and my biggest supporters.

Some days being part of the Australian Airforce Cadets can be very tough, as it is all about discipline. They push you to your furthest point to ensure you give your best even under extreme measures. Other days, Cadets is a treat. The pride you feel wearing a uniform that people show so much respect to is a different feeling, the connections you make with people become unbreakable.

Over my course of Cadets, I have attended many different opportunities and activities. One significant activity was the celebration of the Airforce鈥檚 102nd birthday and the British War Ceremony. The highlight of these ceremonies were my speaking roles, I was delighted to be chosen to read at both services in front important people such as the Governor of South Australia. Another important activity was the Tri-Service Ball. This was for people from the Navy, Airforce, and Army (hence the name 鈥榯ri-service鈥). This ball was held to commemorate all three services and come together in unity.

One of the most significant days of my life was the Anzac Day March in 2022. This march is held every year in the city to commemorate old veterans and other soldiers who served the country. Each cadet who participated in the march was given a different role; I was with a lovely veteran who served in the Vietnamese War. Last year was unfortunately his last march as he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I was more than honoured to be given the opportunity to march him down the city and watch his face light up as he took the march for the very last time.

When I tell people about the Airforce Cadets their main two questions are, do you know how to fly planes? Or have you ever shot a gun before? I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to fly gliders and do many simulators at Aldinga Airport and Parafield Airport. I have also been qualified to shoot .22 rifles, after two long days filled with theory and 150 rounds of live bullets. At the end of the training, we were rewarded with gold rifle badges that are worn on our ceremonial uniforms signifying our qualification.

Being apart of the Airforce Cadets is a feeling like no other. You meet so many new people, you gain new knowledge, new experiences. Getting to wear the uniform, getting to represent the Royal Australian Airforce, volunteering to help other organisations, this all makes the hard work worth it. If someone asked me to do this whole experience all over again, I would. I would do it in a heartbeat.
